• Inside Canada's prisons

This outstanding CBC News Big Picture Special provides a thorough, straightforward portrait of how Canada deals with people who break the law: from the special handling unit where the most dangerous are held to a minimum security facility that some say is too soft; from a man who's never been in prison before to those who will spend the rest of their lives in custody; from the corrections officers who work the cell blocks to the woman who manages the entire system. Eight short documentaries make up this special and are interspersed with a forum of correctional staff, government officials and inmates who comment on and discuss the documentary content. The eight documentaries are: 1) Prison System Overview 2) First Timers 3) Women Beyond Bars 4) GuardsCorrectional Officers 5) How Lifers D...

Canada's latest/largest/most expensive jail facility of $580 Million is located at 18415 - 127 St. NW in Alberta's capital city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Designed by ONPA Architects, this new facility will replace the current 31-year-old Edmonton Remand Centre located in downtown Edmonton. When it opens, the New Edmonton Remand Centre will house 1,952 inmates in seven pods of living units. With future potential expansion it will be able to hold up to 2,816 inmates in 10 different pods. The selected site is approximately 16 hectares or about the size of 27 football fields and is located on the northern side of downtown Edmonton. It was the site of a large wildcat strike over safety issues in late April 2013. It is now open and accepting prisoners and is Canada's most expensive a...

The Ontario government recently appointed Howard Sapers, the federal correctional investigator, to look into the use of segregation - generally known as solitary confinement - and ways to improve the province's prison system. The appointment comes following criticism of the treatment of Adam Capay, a First Nations man kept in segregation for four years while awaiting trial. Meanwhile, prisons across the country grapple with overcrowding, inmates with mental health issues, and a disproportionate number of Indigenous people behind bars. The Agenda assembles a panel to look into the challenges facing the corrections system.

It was considered the oldest operating prison before its closure. Kingston Penitentiary held Canada's most notorious criminals such as serial killers Paul Bernardo and Clifford Olson, and a famous Canadian bank robber, Tyrone Conn. It was closed because the federal government said it is outdated and too expensive to run, so I guess you could say that these buildings have served their own time. Its future is unknown, but because it is a Heritage Site, it cannot be demolished. I would personally like to see them use it for ongoing tours similar to Alcatraz, but don't believe that will be happening as they have it up for sale. A ...

The video shows inmates throwing toilets through windows, a fire erupting and guards dressed in riot gear. It was introduced as evidence during the trial of three of the five men charged in connection with the incident. Luke Alexander Banks, 24, was sentenced last Wednesday to 21 months consecutive to the sentence he's currently serving and Michael MacKinnon, 31, was given 15 months in jail after they were both found guilty of mischief causing damage over $5,000. Charles Wayne Ross, 28, was acquitted. Justice Hugh McLellan released the video, which runs about three minutes, at the end of the two-day trial. On January 9 2010,...

A Court of Queen's Bench judge has released a video of a 2010 riot at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre that caused more than $350,000 in damage. On January 9 2010, 16 inmates at the Saint John Regional Correctional Centre barricaded themselves inside a unit. Furniture, sinks, toilets, lights, wiring and walls were all damaged and the jail was locked down for more than nine hours. Saint John police and firefighters were on standby during the disturbance. No one was injured. A warrant has been issued for Terrence Keleher, who didn't show up for the trial last week. Kayne Crothers, 27, was previously given an 18-month conditional sentence to be served in the community on house arrest due to health issues. About 153 inmates were housed at the jail on Old Black River Road during the riot.
